Union Square News
Ruby Johnson
Look out, Neighborhood Watch meeting in Union Square will be April 7 at 6 p.m. Come out and see what’s happening in your neighborhood and communities.
The month of March we honored and celebrated National Women’s History Month, as well as Doctors Month. April has arrived; however, we are still honoring women and doctors, for they deserve to be honored all year.
Many women and doctors have made a huge difference in their homes and communities, etc. Women are responsible for bringing life into this world. For nine months women grow human life, and doctors are responsible for saving lives.
Today I honor a very special woman who was truly a special lady to many people, who passed away March 19, Mrs. Wilhelmina Hardy Riley, and also today I honor a special doctor who celebrated his birthday on April 1, April Fool’s Day. However, don’t you be fooled; he is the best doctor who specializes in many subjects. We say happy birthday to the greatest doctor on this National Doctors Day, March 30, Dr. Refai.
Now this unique lady Wilhelmina surely made a difference in my life. We grew up together and attended the same school. She was a little smarter than me by entering this world first. After school we both moved from Coosa County.
When I moved back to Alabama we saw each other almost every Sunday and became very close. We shared many stories of the past. Her family and I were close like one family in a pod.
Her dad, Mr. Tilman Hardy Jr.; a man who wore many hats, especially in Coosa County and Rockford; inspired me to write for “The Coosa County News.” He once wrote a weekly column for the “Coosa News,” titled “As I See It.”
Wilhelmina’s home-going was special like her, very unique. Everything said by family and friends was truthful and surreal, nothing added or subtracted. Special songs were sung, some of her favorites.
Wilhelmina loved God, her family and her church family. I am happy to say and know she loved her friends. She was a kind soul just as her sweet mother, Mrs. Kellie Mae, was, feeding souls with good food and good spirit. Wilhelmina will truly be missed by all.
We thank God for all great women and doctors of the universe.
Our prayers and condolences go to the Hardy and Riley family and to the Burton and Sistrunk family in the loss of Mrs. Phennie Sistrunk, a very sweet lady.
Happy birthday to all April babies.
