Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Work continues on the homestead. I started digging fence post holes and ran into roots, so we have to decide if I am going to cut through them or move where I wanted the fence. I did get some nice perennials into the new flower bed, but would like to have more so it is a nice pollinator garden with lots of showy color.
The Rodger’s Shrubbery greenhouse is starting to come down. After the storm damage, then a second round of storm damage, we knew it was time before this most recent storm to get it down and to its new home before more damage was done.
It is bittersweet to see it coming down piece by piece. Rodger and I did a lot of work six years ago to update it and fill it with plants and do plantings out front. After the shutdown in 2020, all the plants went to waste, what we couldn’t plant at our own place.
We never were able to fully recover from that and refill it and just went to seasonal plants and orders for those that were doing landscaping. Tried hiring growers to work it, but each had reasons to not continue so it was really being underutilized.
The possibilities with the open space are now running through my head. Perhaps for additional parking for the store or a space for a marketplace for people to set up tents and tables to sell their wares. We will know more once the structure is down and the utilities removed.
Coosa County Live will be open for Karaoke Night today, March 21, from 7– 9 p.m., and Rodger will wait until 7:30 to see if there are any participants, and if no one shows up will close for the night. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
This month’s Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting will be on March 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. We had great attendance last time, as well as a great dinner of pork chops, chicken, fish, beans, collards, potato salad, fried okra, and many desserts. Dave Dial really brings it together as a great community meal, and this month some have asked for donations to help with all his efforts. Please join us this month for community updates, fellowship and a great meal.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s First Saturday fundraising event is approaching quickly in just two weeks. Please participate with baked goods, rummage sale donations and participation. Donations for breakfast and lunch, bake sale and rummage sale all go to support the efforts needed to keep our fire department well equipped and growing to support our community.
It starts at 8 a.m. and closes at 1 p.m. Come early and stay or come early and return for lunch. Either way you won’t be disappointed with the fellowship and support of our community.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
