Literacy Everywhere! hosted its final community event on Thursday, April 30, at Lee Boy’s BBQ in Rockford, bringing together families for an evening centered on connection, learning and the joy of reading.
The event saw an incredible turnout, with families enjoying a warm welcoming atmosphere, a delicious meal and the opportunity to take home free books to add to their personal collections.
Beyond the food and fellowship, the evening highlighted something even more meaningful, the powerful role families play in a child’s education. When families are actively engaged, students are more likely to develop strong literacy skills, show confidence in the classroom and build a lifelong love of learning.
Events like this create space for parents and caregivers to see firsthand how simple, intentional moments like reading together can have a lasting impact on a child’s academic success.
Meg Masters, project director for Literacy Everywhere!, led a lively read-aloud of “Dog Breath” by Dav Pilkey, modeling how reading can be both interactive and fun.
Through expressive storytelling and humor, she demonstrated techniques families can use at home to keep children engaged, such as asking questions, using different voices and encouraging children to make predictions about the story. These small strategies help turn reading into a shared experience rather than a task, strengthening both literacy skills and family bonds.
A key focus of the event was the importance of building home libraries. Access to books at home has been shown to significantly influence a child’s reading development.
When children have books of their own, they are more likely to read frequently, explore their interests and practice skills learned in school. Providing free books to families not only removes barriers to access, but also empowers parents to create literacy-rich environments in their homes.
For many families, leaving the event with a stack of books was more than just a takeaway, it was an investment in their child’s future.
A home library, no matter how small, sends a powerful message that reading matters. It creates opportunities for daily reading routines, quiet exploration and meaningful conversations sparked by stories.
The final Literacy Everywhere! event served as a reminder that education does not stop at the classroom door. When schools and communities partner with families, they create a support system that nurtures the whole child. By encouraging family engagement and providing resources like books and read-aloud strategies, Literacy Everywhere! continues to plant seeds that will grow into stronger readers, more confident learners and more connected families.
Thank you to Literacy Everywhere! project director Meg Masters for sharing pictures and information.
