Remember going to the Book Fair as a student? There were so many books to choose from, but you only had a certain amount you could spend.
Fast forward to this week when Central High School students participated in a book fair that was entirely free. The only rule was that students must take five books.
However, once they had selected five titles, they were encouraged to take as many as they wanted. The students were thrilled to do so, loading up bags and even boxes with books so they would have plenty to read over the summer break.
The books were chosen based on a student-interest survey Mrs. Masters conducted, which guaranteed the selection was student-approved.
The book fair was sponsored by the Literacy Everywhere! grant which works to provide free books to students that are based on their interests and requests.
Additionally, the book fair helps to build home libraries. The World Literacy Foundation reports that studies indicate that even small home libraries of 20-plus books significantly impact academic outcomes, while larger collections can add more than three years of schooling to a child’s trajectory.
Thank you to Mrs. Masters, project director for the Literacy Everywhere! Grant, for coordinating this event for our students and providing pictures and information.
