Equality & Nixburg News

The Equality Volunteer Fire Department Board would like to thank the community for all their continued support of the Equality Volunteer Fire Department. On March 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. they are holding a “Community Appreciation Day.” Come join us for a hamburger or hot dog.
They would also like to invite any candidates in the upcoming election, as well as all the community’s churches, to come set up a table; no advance coordination required.
The Saturday prior to the community event, on February 28 starting at 9 a.m., will be a work day at the lodge cleaning the place up. Everyone is welcome.
Speaking of fire, there was a controlled burn that got away from the property owners because of the high winds that spread to neighboring properties. Fortunately no loss of life, but a field and barn were damaged.
Ray Volunteer Fire Department showed up first, and then joined by Hanover, then a truck from Equality joined in. This incident highlights the value of our volunteer fire departments in our communities; it also highlights the low number of volunteers available in these emergencies.
It is wonderful when neighboring communities come to help, but it would be much better to have folks who are willing and able to volunteer right here in our local community.
Community activities that are available that you can support:
- The Equality quilting group which meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some folks embroider, crochet and other needle arts.
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale is held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every first and third Friday starting at 10 a.m.
- First Saturday Equality Volunteer Fire Department fundraising event is March 7 starting at 8 a.m.
- Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held on Thursday, February 26, starting at 6:30 p.m., and Dave Dial will be preparing food for a donation, or you are welcome to bring a dish to pass.
