Society seeks public’s support in effort to save old Extension building

Congratulations to LeeBoys BBQ on their opening this past week. So go by and try out Rockford’s newest restaurant. Also, they are open for Sunday lunch. Check out their Facebook page for times and menu.
Another new business coming to Rockford is Enoch’s Hardware Bait and Tackle in the old Smith hardware store, the same building where Our Daily Bread is located. They haven’t officially opened, but they already have stock in place.
Central Cougars played hard last week, but unfortunately didn’t come home with a victory. Tonight they will play Lanett at Lanett. Good luck, and bring home another win!
The Historical Society is actively working to preserve the Old Rock Extension Building, a significant landmark in the Rockford community. Several months ago, the County Commission voted to demolish this building to make space for an expansion of the current courthouse. While it is clear that the courthouse needs additional space and renovations, those plans have been postponed indefinitely.
Despite the delay in courthouse expansion, there is now a proposal to tear down the Extension building to create a parking lot.
The Historical Society strongly believes that this structure is an important part of Rockford’s history and should be preserved for future generations. The building is still in good condition, offering several office spaces, a meeting room and a kitchen, making it a valuable asset that could continue to serve the community.
Constructed in the 1930s, the Old Rock Extension Building has played a vital role in the lives of many Coosa County residents over the years and has the potential for many more years of use. Its stonework closely resembles that of the Women’s Club House, which is listed on the Alabama Historical Register. The Society feels that the Old Rock Extension Building deserves similar recognition and protection.
While the Historical Society would be pleased to utilize the offices within this building, their efforts are focused on ensuring its preservation so it can be used by the community once again.
To demonstrate public support, a petition will be presented to the Commission, with copies to sign available at various locations throughout the area. For more information, community members are encouraged to reach out to me by phone or email. The Historical Society asks for your support in this important endeavor to safeguard a piece of Rockford’s heritage.
My Bible verse this week is again about patience. Proverbs 25:15 reads, “With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.”
This passage is teaching us that patience, along with a gentle tongue, can have a powerful and positive impact in persuading authorities of your concerns. Well chosen words can help persuade someone to change or pursue a difficult course of action. Just as the tortoise won the race with steady patient steps, so can we proceed in life to guide our steps.
Be in prayer for the ones that have lost a loved one and that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
