Students interested in the arts, audio visual technology and communications career pathway participated in a recent Chew & Chat field trip.
A Chew & Chat is a full day of career exploration where students visit industries and companies connected to one career field. Students are selected for these experiences based on their career interest and skills and confidence inventories, which enable them to connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities.
The first stop of the day was Boosters Incorporated, a family-owned business that has been operating for more than 37 years. Boosters specializes in creating promotional “swag” items.
The students learned about the design process, from creating artwork and setting up screens to preparing layouts for printing. The highlight of the visit was the chance for students to design and take home a custom T-shirt featuring their school mascot.
From there, students toured WSFA TV, a Gray Local Media station that recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. They explored each department to see how the digital process works behind the scenes to bring live television to viewers.
Students witnessed a live broadcast in action and learned about various job opportunities in the newsroom, from editing and uploading content. One of the highlights of the tour was a session with Nick Gunter, WSFA meteorologist, who explained the different software systems the weather team uses to keep the viewing area safe during severe weather.
Students even had the chance to step in front of the green screen and try their skills as a weather forecaster. This hands-on experience gave them valuable insight into the wide variety of careers in broadcasting and media.
The day concluded at Auburn University, Montgomery (AUM) with a tour of the Communications and Theatre Department led by Dr. Matthew Killmeier, associate professor of communication and theatre in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Students had the opportunity to see the department’s facilities, meet with faculty and learn about applying to AUM, scholarship opportunities and the range of programs connected to their career pathway.
A special thank you to AUM for sponsoring lunch and supporting this incredible learning experience for our students.
Opportunities like this Chew & Chat allow students to gain first-hand exposure to industries that align with their skills and interests, helping them take steps toward a successful future.
Thank you to Coosa County Schools career coach Karen Hayes for making these learning experiences available to our students and sharing information and pictures about Chew and Chat field trips.
