Old Rock Jail closed until September

Happy Fourth of July! Weekend filled with fireworks, parades, BBQ, family, and friends.

Also happy birthday to all the July folks having birthdays this month, which includes me!

However, we often forget the reason behind the holiday. This was the date in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. We were no longer under British rule, but an independent country.

Just think, next year we celebrate being a country for 250 years! We’ve come a long way!

Be sure and mark July 26 as Bingo night with the Richville Volunteer Fire Department at 6:30 p.m. and plan to attend. There will be concessions, too. We always have a good time even if you don’t win a prize. Their next Boston butt sale will be Labor Day weekend.

The “Old Rock Jail” is now closed for the months of July and August. It will reopen the Sunday after Labor Day, so if you haven’t visited come by and check out the oldest rock jail in Alabama.

The Historical Society’s next meeting will be on July 27 at 2 p.m. at the Rockford Senior Center. Our speaker will be Jim Phillips. You don’t have to be a member to attend. Door prizes and refreshments will be provided by members.

My Bible verse this week is about trusting God with our future. Joshua 1:9 reads, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

No matter what challenges come along in our lives, God is with us. He doesn’t promise a life without problems, but reassures us that He is always there with us. This promise should strengthen our faith each day of our lives. It gives us the ability to continue with our lives whenever we encounter adversity. So, continue to read the Bible and pray for guidance as we live each day.

Be in prayer for the ones that have lost a loved one and that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.

Organizations in the area, as well as churches, I need your events! If your family has some news or an event to share, please contact me. I would prefer text to 334-414-7147 or emails to wardgrand6@gmail.com, but phone calls will be fine, too. If you don’t get me when you call, be sure to leave a message.
