It looks like June is going to be as wet of a month as May! New records were set in May for rainfall, and it seems that June is trying to do the same. While gardens, flowers and lawns need some rain, the storms have been hard on them. Hopefully we’ll see some sunshine next week with only an occasional rain and no storms.
This Saturday, June 14, is Bingo night at Richville Fire Department. It starts at 6:30 p.m. so make plans to attend. There will be concessions, too. We always have a good time even if you don’t win a prize.
Providence Baptist Church starts Vacation Bible School on Monday night at 5:30 p.m. It will be nightly through Thursday. Family night will be Thursday, also. The van will be picking up in Rockford, so if you need a ride, let me know. Looking forward to the week. Tiring, but fulfilling!
The “Old Rock Jail” will be closed this Sunday for Father’s Day. It will be open again the next two Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Then it will close for the summer months of July and August. If you haven’t visited come by and check out the oldest rock jail in Alabama.
The Historical Society is working on several projects to preserve the history of Coosa County. Thanks to all who have already donated to the digitization project which is ongoing. Also, we welcome anyone as a member. Our next meeting will be on July 27 at 2 p.m. at the Rockford Senior Center. More about that in July.
This Sunday is Father’s Day. It was first proposed in 1909 after Sonora Dodd; from Spokane, Wash.; heard a Mother’s Day sermon. Her Civil War veteran father had raised her and her siblings after the death of their mother. She saw the need to honor him and other dedicated fathers just as mothers were being honored.
It took many years for Father’s Day to be officially recognized as a national holiday. President Lyndon Johnson in 1966 designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring it as a permanent holiday.
My Bible verse this week is about fathers. Proverbs 20:7 reads, “The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.”
Having a godly father is one of the greatest blessings a child can have. Fathers (and mothers) have a responsibility to their children to be examples for them to follow. Integrity is being honest and trustworthy, striving to do what is right. But it also includes being faithful to God, following His teachings. Sadly, many fathers (and mothers) do not set a godly example for their children to follow.
Be in prayer for the ones that have lost a loved one and that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
