May 17
The J.D. Thompson Alumni Association will hold a May Day event May 17 at the historic Coosa County Training School, located at 1854 Coosa County Road 93 in Cottage Grove. Day starts with the Chlora K. May Fun Run/Walk-a-Thon with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and walk starting at 8 a.m. From 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. guests can tour the historic school, view exhibits and explore the school’s history. The Grove food concessions will be open, so come hungry and thirsty. Vendors, a DJ and fun activities for all age groups, including bingo. “The Gospel Hour of Power” will be from 11-12 outside, so please bring your lawn chairs. The monthly meeting of the Coosa County Conservation District Board will be on Monday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at the District Office located in Hanover at 226 Coosa County Road 157.

AWR 328: All Hazards Preparedness for Animals in Disasters will be held May 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Coosa County Extension Office. This 8-hour, tuition-free, DHS/FEMA-certified course will provide livestock producers, emergency managers, veterinarians, Extension agents, veterinary technicians, rural community leaders, public and human health personnel, and fire and law enforcement with tools to protect, respond to and recover from the consequences of disasters, e.g., fire, flood, heat, earthquake, tornadoes, hurricanes, hazardous materials, and catastrophic disease exposure involving animals in rural communities. AWR 448: All Hazards Planning for Animal, Agriculture and Food-Related Disasers will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 28 at the Coosa County Extension Office, located at 243 Coosa Co. Rd. 75, Rockford. This DHS/FEMA-certified, 8-hour, tuition-free, management-level course will provide the background information needed to lead a multi-agency team of emergency planners in the development of an Emergency Support Functions (ESF) annex for food- and/or animal-related disasters to supplement their community’s existing Emergency Operation Plans (EOP). The course will address such topics as agroterrorism, detection and diagnosis, unique challenges that rural communities face in planning for and responding to food- and/or animal-related disasters, utilization of ESF, and more. All content will be presented at an all-day instructor-led training that will include presentations and problem-solving activities that will be completed in small groups. June 9
The Coosa County Farmers Federation Women’s Division announces its annual Coosa County Heritage Cooking Contest on Monday, June 9. This year’s category is Iced Sheet Cake. Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. All Coosa County Farmers Federation members age 18 and over are eligible to participate. Applications with all information can be picked up at the Alfa office in Rockford, or send a request to Donna Brown at donnabrn77@yahoo.com. Contest date is Monday, June 9. Cake must be turned in at the Alfa office by 5 p.m. for judging.
June 16-18
Summer Camp is June 16-18 at the Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana. Registration for regular 4-H Summer Camp is now open in 4HOnline. 4-H members ages 9-13 are invited to participate. Coosa County 4-H has 20 camp spots, and they are available on a first come, first served basis. Register in 4HOnline at v2.4honline.com. Payment can be made in full in 4HOnline. Camp fee is $175. Camp session for Coosa County is scheduled for Session 5: June 16-18. Registration for Teen 4-H opens on February 3 for camp for ages 14-18. Need to know more? Weekly
The Goodwater Youth Development and Recreational Center is open to the public weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and practice days for the travel ball team are those same days from 5 to 6 p.m. Cheerleader practice is held on Wednesdays and Fridays. Monthly
Richville Neighborhood Watch will be held the first Thursday of each month at the fire department, 13185 Coosa County Rd. 14, Rockford, 35136. The gathering begins with a potluck meal at 6 p.m., and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Come out and see what is happening in your community.

Monthly breakfast returns to West Coosa Senior Center! The West Coosa Senior Center in Stewartville will host breakfast on the fourth Saturday of each month from 7-10 a.m. at the center, located at 47 Coosa County Road 70, Sylacauga, 35151 (the old Stewartville School). Breakfast is $8 per plate with choice of ham, bacon, sausage, eggs, gravies, and more! Dine in or call ahead at 256-249-2024 to carry out. Donations appreciated! Breakfast will be served monthly now through October, with it not being held in November or December.

West Coosa Friday Night Dance & Dine will be held the second Friday of each month at the West Coosa Senior Center! Live oldies music by The Misfitz Band, Potluck supper – bring your favorite covered dish to share. Doors open at 5 p.m., and supper starts at 5:15 p.m. Admission is FREE! Quarterly
The Hanover Community Club and Neighborhood Watch will now hold quarterly gatherings at Andrews Chapel. These quarterly gatherings are held on the third Tuesday of March, June, September, and December at Andrews Chapel Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited and encouraged to attend. Y’all come!
