The Town of Kellyton has been busily preparing for the municipal election to be held in August, with primary action at recent Town Council meetings relating to ordinances for the election.
The Council has unanimously approved and adopted six election ordinances, all relating to the town’s upcoming election. One such ordinance reflects that the town will use electronic voting machines and will utilize Elections Systems & Software for supplies and other needs.
Additionally, an ordinance related to salaries states that the salary for both the mayor and all Council members will continue to be zero. As such, the elected official positions will continue to be served on a volunteer basis, with the mayor and five Council members receiving no pay.
A third ordinance set place numbers for Council positions rather than establishing districts. The positions are at large with places being set for the Council as follows, reflecting current Council members: George Camp in Place 1, Nancy Fuller in Place 2, Gwen Rich in Place 3, Donna Keel in Place 4, and Missy Kohls in Place 5.
Another ordinance reflects that officials who will work the town’s election will include one inspector and three clerks. Additionally, Town Clerk Karen Keel will serve as absentee manager for the election because of Mayor Johnny Sharpe appearing on the ballot.
The Council also adopted an ordinance to set the qualification fees, with the fee to qualify for mayor or any Council position being set at $10. Anyone wishing to run for a Council position must specify for which place they wish to run.
All qualification fees collected will be deposited into the town’s general fund. Those interested in running for office can begin qualifying June 10, with the last day to qualify being no later than 5 p.m. June 24.
The other ordinance states that the town’s election will be held August 26, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., at the Kellyton Civic Complex Cafeteria.
In other business, it was stated that the town’s Solid Waste Management Survey had been completed and turned into the County Commission. The Council agreed to adopt the Coosa County Commission’s Waste Management Plan.
The next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Kellyton Town Council will be held at 6 p.m. April 1.
