A traffic stop led to the arrest of a Sylacauga man on drug-related charges earlier this month.
Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that on August 9, Deputy Kelley was patrolling U.S. Highway 280 when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop.
While approaching the vehicle and speaking with the driver, Kelley smelled an odor of marijuana. While the driver was searching for his license, Kelley saw a glass container of a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana in the vehicle.
While conducting a search, Kelley asked the driver if he had anything on him. Hammond reported that Kelley saw that the driver had something in his mouth.
When Kelley asked the driver to open his mouth and lift his tongue, he saw a green leafy substance under the driver’s tongue.
As such, 30-year-old Daveon Shamarey’a Nix was arrested and charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and tampering with physical evidence.
Nix’s total bond was set at $5,000. He was released on bond the same day to await trial.
