The Central High School Coosa County Science Fair was held on Tuesday, October 8, in the on-campus gym. There were 201 projects this year. The students did an outstanding job of performing experiments using the scientific method. Their project boards were creative and informative.
All students presented their projects to their classmates during their science classes. It was the first year for the seventh grade and eighth grade students to present. Alicia Thompson is the seventh and eighth grade teacher. Jacques Mitchell is the biology, physical science, and earth & space science teacher. Mary White is the anatomy & physiology, chemistry, and physics teacher.
The seventh grade Life Science winners were 1st place: Kaden Tindall (Trash to Biogas), 2nd place: MaryAnn Ward (Does Age Make a Difference in Taste Preferences?), and tied for 3rd place: Madison Lowe (Which Condiments Do Ants Prefer?), Harper Self (Which Energy Drink Has the Most Electrolytes – Tested Through Conduction?), and Jenni Yates (Which Fertilizer is the Best?).
The eighth grade Physical Science winners were 1st place: Bryer Harmon (Is the Quality of a Fingerprint Lift Dependent on Temperature?), 2nd place: Henley Stevens (Which Cup is the Best Cold Temperature Insulator?), and tied for 3rd place: Ky’Liyah Birmingham (Which Bat Hits a Ball Further: Wooden or Metal?) and Lillie Kimbrell (Which Brand of Gum Retains Its Flavor the Longest?).
The ninth grade Biology winners were 1st place: Anna Trussell (Which Antibiotic is the Most Effective Against Gram-Negative and Gram-Positive Bacteria), 2nd place: Katie Griffith (Which Chicken Feed Causes Quail Hens to Lay the Most Eggs?), 3rd place: Wyatt Kimbrell (What is the Effect of Different Exercises on Heart Rate?) (not pictured).
The tenth through twelfth grade Physical Science, Earth Science, and Anatomy & Physiology winners were 1st place: Torrance Kelley (Is Styrofoam or Plastic the Best Heat Insulator?), 2nd place: Tayla Russell (Gummy Bear Osmosis), and 3rd place: Tytanna Parker (Is the Egg Yolk or the Egg White the Emulsifier?).
The tenth through twelfth grade Chemistry and Physics winners were 1st place: Cheyenne Wright (Which Type of Milk Makes the Best Plastic?), 2nd place: Heidi Phillips (Which Type of Solar Oven Cooks the Best?), and 3rd place Jacob Stevens (Does the Color of a T-shirt Affect How Much Heat is Absorbed from the Sun?).
We were so happy for Mrs. Tabitha Hyatt’s Life Skills class to participate this year. They conducted a survey to see which drink is the most popular. They did a great job. The members are Skyla Proctor, Simone Young, Micah Penton, Caleb Adair, Damion Marbury, DaJohn McCoy, and Anna Grogan.
Special thank you to Coosa County Schools science coach Shelley Wood for directing the Science Fair in collaboration with the classroom teachers, as well as the parents who supported and encouraged their child through the various steps of the project.
