Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
It was nice to get a reprieve from the rain. Yes, we needed the rain after spring started in drought conditions. However, the mud was getting pretty deep at our place and grass was getting pretty high.
So, I was able to get the lawns mowed earlier this week, and I am not ankle deep in mud when I walk around the farmyard. I can’t speak too favorably about the high temperatures, though; as I grow older, I just can’t tolerate working outside in the summer heat. So, after afternoon chores I need a cold shower and indoor tasks to keep me busy.
What is better than locally grown organic vegetables? Well lucky for us the summer Customer Supported Agriculture (CSA) is open at Coosa Fancy, which begins July 11! For a flat rate of $120 for farm pickup, guarantee yourself a weekly taste of tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, available greens, and whatever else your favorite small farm has growing in the garden! Learn more at www.coosa-fancy.com.
Coosa Fancy also has a discount available for those ready to sign up for their 10-week Fall CSA! Check out their website for options and more information!
Equality Volunteer Fire Department is holding a Fish Fry Fundraiser at the Equality Fire Department Lodge on July 3, 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, July 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be $15 a plate, $6 for a child’s plate. Fish, hush puppies, coleslaw, fries or onion rings, and drink. Thank you for supporting the Equality Fire Department.
Community activities that are available that you can support:
- The Equality quilting group meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale is held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Highway 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9 in Nixburg.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every Friday starting at 10 a.m.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
