Happy February! Wow, we are already in the second month of the year.
Happy birthday to all those celebrating birthdays this month. I have a great-granddaughter celebrating her third birthday this month, as well as another great-grandson born on Groundhog Day, making 12 great-grands.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all! While the start of the holiday was honoring Christian martyrs named Valentine, it has become a day linked to romance thanks to poet Geoffrey Chaucer. In the 1500s, it became popular to send handwritten love notes with sweet rhymes and decorated with hearts and flowers.
With the Industrial Revolution and affordable postal rates, mass-produced cards came into being. This was the start of the commercialization of the holiday which spread to include flowers and chocolate exchanges, as well.
The next Bingo at Richville Volunteer Fire Department will be on Saturday, February 21, at 6:30 p.m. So come out and support your fire department and have fun doing it. They will also have concessions.
Volunteer Connections of Central Alabama (VCCA) prepares tax returns every year as a free service. In addition to their main office in Alexander City, they come to Rockford on Wednesdays at the fellowship hall of Rockford Methodist Church for drop-off and pick-up services. They will be there every Wednesday with April 8 being the last day for pick-ups. We will only take drop-offs that day if you can pick-up in the Alexander City office.
My Bible verses for this week are about helping others. James 2:14-17 reads, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
Two people that we lost recently followed these verses.
First, Marty Rittmann dedicated many hours as an advocate to helping children, especially those of our county. She also was a major sponsor to the free tax service provided by VCCA, donating many hours to preparing taxes, especially for the citizens of our county. She went beyond the “do the job” and will be greatly missed.
Next, Ronnie Joiner was also dedicated to Coosa County, as well as our country. He was a jack of all trades, using his talents to build many projects in the county. He was a man of his word, which many politicians sadly lack. He not only served as commissioner, but also as vice president of the Coosa County Historical Society. He loved history and had a wealth of knowledge that he enjoyed sharing with others.
Working with both of these people was a joy, and I will miss both. They left a big gap to fill!
Be in prayer for those that have lost loved ones in our community, as well as those that are ill. Remember the shut-ins in our community, as well. They don’t just need our prayers, but can benefit from visits, also, even if it’s just a phone call.
