Special to the News
Coosa County students and their families enjoyed the fourth annual Parade of Trees and Winter Wonderland Literacy event sponsored by Literacy Everywhere! Grant.
This event exemplifies how all the aspects of the grant, students, families, and community come together to promote literacy in a fun, innovative manner.
Students and their families received free books, played carnival games and learned how literacy is an essential part of school success. They were also treated to s’mores and everyone’s favorite, Christmas Tree Cakes! There were also special visits from Santa and the Grinch.
The literacy event was also an opportunity for some of the high school students to showcase their clubs and the opportunities they present. These clubs are an excellent example of “reading to learn,” which is the goal for high school students as they prepare for either higher education, a trade, or the job force. For example, the Skills USA members apply literacy skills to real world situations such as automotive repair.
One of Literacy Everywhere’s community partners, Empowered to Conquer, helped with the arts and crafts booths and were able to talk to participants about their programs, which students at CHS participate in.
Literacy Everywhere! is funded by an Innovative Approach to Literacy Grant. This grant provides resources for free books and literacy activities for students in Coosa County Schools, as well as the communities.
Thank you to Meg Masters, project director of Literacy Everywhere!, for sharing pictures and information.
