Adding U-Haul rentals to Jenny’s General Store has not only added a service to the business, but also some additional responsibilities to my life. I honestly did not realize how popular it would be.
Within days a trailer was rented, then a truck was dropped off and rented again within a day; however, there were several other customers also wanting to rent that same truck. The increase in activity may just be the catalyst to hiring a part-time employee, which could grow into a full-time job.
With all that new activity added to my already busy life of a full-time job, full-time business owner/operator/bookkeeper, and the farm chores I almost didn’t get to take a vacation. However, found a way to just walk away for a long weekend with my kids.
We met halfway between them in Tennessee. We had fun in a drive-thru safari, watching my 6-year-old grandson drop a full bucket of feed, and watching my adult children get traumatized by over enthusiastic ostriches and llamas. I did not get my family game night, but we did have fun in spite of the rainstorms. We did a firepit pie iron sandwiches and s’more dessert, something my father did with me when I was a child that has become a family tradition.
We have no plans for a family vacation next year because of my niece’s wedding in the spring and my son’s wedding in the fall. So, we all agreed that 2028 will be the next family trip together. However, I may have to do a couple of stay-cations just to get away from my very busy life!
Now I am back to my busy, busy life, which includes this month’s Neighborhood Watch meeting on Thursday, August 27, starting at 6:30 p.m. with a meal provided, so please join in for the community gathering, sheriff’s report and other local news.
Community activities that are available in Equality and Nixburg area:
- The Equality quilting group meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale, held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9 in Nixburg.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every Friday starting at 10 a.m.
