Equality & Nixburg News

I saw a Facebook post the other day that made me think. It was written about church, but can apply to all areas of life from community, family, volunteerism, etc. It was titled “The Most Useless Man” (but applies to women, too!).
Attends every service but never serves,
Knows all the answers but helps no one,
Criticizes everything but builds nothing,
Talks about the work but does none of it,
Sees every need but meets none of them.
So sad that we have armchair warriors of all ages in our society that fit this above and then complain about how the town, county, state, country, world is all going to ruin. And the few that are actually doing things or once were very active in the community but have withdrawn, are burnt out by carrying the full load.
It is up to each and every one of us to shut our mouths and move our bodies and participate in our communities, whether it is the local church, fire department, town, county, state, etc. There is something we all can do that fits within our talents and abilities and our time! We always prioritize our time around what we love, and if we love our communities, we will make time for them!
Find a way to actually participate in what you care about; even small efforts are needed and appreciated. I once volunteered for an organization where a fellow 89-year-old volunteer in a wheelchair spent an hour or two a month just doing some paperwork that helped the organization immensely and freed me up to do more manual work. I appreciated that because I hate getting bogged down in paperwork, but it was perfect for them.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department’s First Saturday is next week, August 1, starting at 8 a.m. with breakfast for a donation, bake sale and rummage sale. Lunch starts at 11 a.m. with hamburgers and hot dog plates.
Jenny’s General Store will be closed July 30 to August 3 and hopefully will have exciting news to share when they reopen.
Community activities that are available in the Equality and Nixburg area:
- The Equality quilting group meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale is held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Highway 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9 in Nixburg.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every Friday starting at 10 a.m.
