Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
I forgot to wish all the May babies, which includes my eldest daughter and one of my sons-in-law, happy birthday!
Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, so also belated Happy Mother’s Day for all the mothers, and others who help fill that role. I had a great day with most of my family coming by for lunch and to visit.
I have enjoyed having my granddaughter, her husband and little girl visiting from North Carolina for the last couple of weeks. The house will be really quiet when they leave Sunday morning.
School is almost over for the year with graduation on Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. at the Keith Bullard Stadium, weather permitting. All the students are looking forward to that last day, but probably the teachers and staff even more so!
Hopefully, everyone is registered to vote because Tuesday is election day. I will work the polls that day at Richville so I hope to see a good turnout for not only there, but the county, as well.
This is an important election because not only will it decide who is on the ballot in November for state offices, but will determine District 4 and 5 commissioners, as well as District 4 Board of Education member. So, it’s important that you vote; if not you have no voice in our government.
There will not be bingo in May, I’ll update on the date in June in a later column.
Don’t forget to get your order in for those wonderful Boston Butts they sell for Memorial Day. So see any fire department member and get on their list. They are $35, and they usually sell out ahead of time. Pickup date is May 23 between 7 and 9 a.m. Also, the Neighborhood Watch will have baked goods for sale, so bring extra money to support them.
The Old Rock Jail will be open this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be closed the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Admission is $3 for adults, and children under 12 free. Plans are underway for it to be open during Rockford’s 250 Celebration in June. More about that later.
This week my Bible verse is about family love and togetherness. Ecclesiastes 4:12 reads, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
As families, including church families, we need to be united in our actions and thoughts. Unity provides strength and support against life’s trials and Satan’s temptations. There is a saying, “no man is an island,” which reinforces the unity of community necessary to endure hardships and challenges. That verse also reminds us to include God as the center of that three-strand cord to create a spiritual bond that is unbreakable.
Be in prayer for the Anita Lavender family. She will be missed by all, especially the Rockford Senior Center and the Historical Society. Pray also for others that have lost loved ones in our community, as well as those that are ill. Remember the shut-ins in our community, as well. They don’t just need our prayers, but can benefit from visits, also, even if it’s just a phone call.
