Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Last week, I mentioned how we missed a frost Easter weekend; well this past weekend was the cool weather we usually have around Easter.
Thankfully we didn’t have a frost since many people have already planted their gardens. I’m going to try a small, raised bed garden this year with squash, cucumbers, peppers, and a couple of other vegetables. I’ll see how it goes since it’s been years since I had a garden.
Plan to come out tomorrow night for Bingo at the Richville Volunteer Fire Department starting at 6:30 p.m. They will also have concessions. So, come out for a fun time.
Also, time to start thinking about those wonderful Boston butts they sell for Memorial Day. So, see any fire department member and get on their list. They are $35, and they usually sell out ahead of time.
Mark your calendars to visit the Old Rock Jail for a tour. The Coosa County Historical Society conducts tours on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 free.
It will be open each Sunday until the end of June except for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day weekend. It is closed the months of July and August, reopening in September, the Sunday after Labor Day until the last Sunday in October.
This Sunday, April 26, the Historical Society will hold their quarterly meeting at 2 p.m. at The Old Rockford School, located at the intersection of Coosa County Road 18 and Davis Street. This should be an interesting meeting with guest speaker Chip Gates, historian of the Lake Mitchell HOBO Association. His presentation will be on Native American history of western Coosa County, the history of Fixico Creek and Fixico mines, history of Little Joe’s Fish Camp, and the community of Dollar which is now covered by Lake Mitchell.
He will share stories, photos and mementos during the program. The public is invited. Membership is not required to attend. The cost of annual membership is only $25. Refreshments will be served.
This week my Bible verse is again about renewal of spirit. Psalms 51:10 reads, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
King David was pleading for total renewal of his spirit after committing adultery with Bathsheba and murdering her husband. Being faithful or God-fearing does not prevent us from the tendency of our sinful nature. As humans we are not exempt.
However, just as David did in his psalm, we can ask God for forgiveness and mercy. No matter how big our sins, if we confess them to God, He is faithful and just to forgive us. Even as Christians, we still sin. But, thankfully, we can confess, and God forgives us.
Be in prayer for those that have lost loved ones in our community, as well as those that are ill. Remember the shut-ins in our community, as well. They don’t just need our prayers, but can benefit from visits, also, even if it’s just a phone call.
