Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Tax season is over! While that may not excite some people, it certainly does me!
Starting the end of January until this week I volunteer to prepare taxes. While I enjoy it, I’m ready to do something else with my time. Volunteer Connections of Central Alabama provides a great service to our county with this free income tax preparation at the Rockford and Alexander City locations.
Warm weather is finally here. We missed a frost on Easter weekend, so maybe everyone can get their gardens planted if they haven’t already. There are several events happening in April in and around our county as people go out on weekends and explore.
Don’t forget about Bingo next Saturday, April 25, at the Richville Volunteer Fire Department starting at 6:30 p.m. So come out and support your fire department and have fun doing it. They will also have concessions. So, mark your calendars!
It’s also time to start thinking about those wonderful Boston butts they sell for Memorial Day. So, see any fire department member and get on their list. They are $35, and they usually sell out ahead of time, so get your name on the list.
The Coosa County Historical Society has started the new season at the Old Rock Jail for tours on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 free.
It will be open each Sunday until the end of June except for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day weekend. It is closed the months of July and August, reopening in September, the Sunday after Labor Day until the last Sunday in October.
Mark your calendars for the quarterly meeting for the Historical Society on Sunday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at The Old Rockford School, located at the intersection of Coosa County Road 18 and Davis Street.
This should be an interesting meeting with guest speaker Chip Gates, historian of the Lake Mitchell HOBO Association. His presentation will be on Native American history of western Coosa County, the history of Fixico Creek and Fixico mines, history of Little Joe’s Fish Camp, and the community of Dollar which is now covered by Lake Mitchell. He will share stories, photos and mementos during the program.
The public is invited. Membership is not required to attend. The cost of annual membership is only $25. Refreshments will be served.
This week my Bible verse is about spirit renewal. Second Corinthians 4:16 reads, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are renewed day by day.”
Even if our bodies are physically weak, as believers we experience daily spiritual strengthening to shift our focus from our everyday aches and pains to eternal life that God promises.
Billy Graham said, “Most of all, let the Word of God fill you and renew your mind every day. When our minds are on Christ, Satan has little room to maneuver.”
Be in prayer for those that have lost loved ones in our community, as well as those that are ill. Remember the shut-ins in our community, as well. They don’t just need our prayers, but can benefit from visits, also, even if it’s just a phone call.
