Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
This is it; tomorrow, March 7, is the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Board Appreciation Day to thank the community for all their continued support of the Equality Volunteer Fire Department.
From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. come join us for a hamburger or hot dog. If the parking lot is too full you are more than welcome to park next to Jenny’s General store as overflow parking.
A local business in Rockford, Three Moon Harvest, will be holding herbal classes at Jenny’s General every third Thursday of the months of March through August. The series is titled “Thirsty Thursdays: Quench your thirst for basic herbal knowledge.” First session, “Cold Care Tea, Tonic and Tincture,” will be held March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m.
There is a fee for the class which includes a non-refundable deposit when registering, as well as leaving the course with your own product. More information is coming soon.
Spring on the homestead has hit, even though it is technically still winter. We have numerous nests for the geese and ducks, and we are trying to prevent the chickens from hiding their eggs as we don’t need any more chickens added to our flocks.
Two kid goats were born recently, with two does due next month. And we even have some grass sprouting in the pasture, which will make the horse and milk cow happy.
In my cheese making adventures I have made several pounds of cheddar which are aging. I ran out of rennet, but milk was piling up so had to start looking at some simple cheeses, and once I did homemade cottage cheese I think I will never eat store bought again! It is simply wonderful and creamy.
I will also do a simple mozzarella and try a paneer. All made without rennet and meant to be eaten right away instead of aging.
Community activities that are available that you can support include:
- The Equality quilting group which meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some attendees embroider, crochet and other needle arts.
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale, held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every first and third Friday starting at 10 a.m.
- First Saturday Equality Volunteer Fire Department fundraising event is March 7 starting at 8 a.m.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
