National Farm-City Week is a program that includes producers, agricultural organizations, businesses, and youth and civic clubs. Farm-City programs serve communities throughout the U.S. and Canada by educating youth and adults about the interdependence of agriculture and industry.
The main goal of Farm-City is to deepen understanding of the relationship between rural farmers and urban families.
The 2025 Farm-City theme is “Grow Alabama.” The local Coosa County Farmer’s Federation’s Women’s committee of the Alabama Farmers Federation (Alfa) sponsored our local essay and poster contests for this year’s Farm-City celebration.
Students studied and discussed the importance of the role of farmers. Then, they submitted 500-word essays on the “Grow Alabama” topic.
Central High School seventh through ninth grade students competed in the Division I category. Students in tenth through twelfth grades competed in the Division II category.
First-place winners in each division received $75. The teacher of the first-place winner in each division also won $75. Second-place winners won $50, and third-place winners were awarded $25.
Our Division I winners were: First place Maryann Ward, second place Henley Stevens and third place Amaria Gaddis. The winning teacher was Ms. Melody Rathel.
Our Division II winners were: First place Shelemiah Kelley, second place Destini Kelly and third place Ethyn Tison. The winning teacher was Mrs. Mary White.
Congratulations to these teachers and students. Thank you to Glenda Cardwell and Beverly Burks of the Coosa County Farmer’s Federation’s Women’s committee for organizing the event.
Special thank you to Central Science Coach Shelley Wood for serving as a liaison between the Farmers Federation and our teachers and sharing pictures and information.
