Special to the News
Each of Central High School Coosa County’s three science teachers were awarded a 2026 Central Alabama Electric Cooperative Bright Ideas grant.
Mary White received a grant for her “Sailing Through Systems” project teaching students about the digestive, respiratory and urinary systems.
Jacques Mitchell received a grant for his “Sweet Secrets of Leaves and Algae” study which will have students conducting experiments to see how plant and algae cells turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen using sunlight.
Alicia Thompson received a grant for her “Seeing the Light” experiments, allowing students to see how light reflects and refracts using lasers, refraction tands and optic boards.
Thank you to Coosa County Schools science coach Shelley Wood for coordinating the grants and sharing pictures and information on the awards.
We look forward to more pictures and information as the science teachers implement the lessons funded by the grants.
In addition, Central High School Career Coach Karen Hayes also received a grant for career exploration activities which will have student career organizations from the Coosa County Career Tech Center working with our elementary students to build soft and hard skills for career development.
