In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
Boy we have ended one year and started another with many people being sick from some type of illness. Some have the flu, some have pneumonia, some respiratory issues, and some stomach issues. Whatever it is I’m ready for it all to be gone. Here’s hoping everyone will get well soon so we can go back to our regular daily activities.
We have also officially come into the political season with anyone interested in running for a public office needing to qualify with either the Republican or Democratic Party or go to the probate judge to fill out paperwork to run as an Independent.
I do hope that any of you interested have researched what the office you are interested in is REALLY all about. Even though some think it’s just attending a meeting once a month and receiving a paycheck, there are actually many different duties and responsibilities that go along with it. You can expect phone calls at all hours, complaints and questions from the people who you REPRESENT. Please don’t waste everyone’s time – including your own – if you are not aware of what you are signing up for. You may think it’s a part-time job, but, if done correctly, it is not.
I met a very nice couple from Kellyton in the Our Daily Bread deli this past Monday. I overheard them saying they had never been there so, being my usual friendly self, I went over and spoke to them. They had been to the courthouse last week when the power was out in town and tried to eat at the deli, but they were also closed due to no power. So, they came back, took care of business at the courthouse and came over for some lunch. I shared my very positive review on the loaded potato soup with them and then asked if they had been to our other restaurants.
They were not aware of LeeBoys BBQ, and they had recently gone all the way to Opelika for barbecue. They had been to Triple R in the past, but didn’t realize all the other options available in Rockford now. I explained how each restaurant had different hours/days they are open and how their menus each provide something not served at the others. They said they would be back.
With this said, we all need to be ambassadors for what we have in Rockford and other areas of Coosa County. Many people in our county don’t know about some of the new things we have going on. As I write this, I realize I didn’t tell them about Kelly’s Crossroads west of town on Highway 22! If I see them again, I’ll share.
We have wonderful people who are stepping out on faith to provide us with businesses we have had to drive 15-20 miles to in the past. Save gas, SHOP LOCAL! And take time to tell these business owners that you appreciate them! AND remember to tip!
I have heard there will be a meeting at the Rockford Volunteer Fire Department this coming Tuesday evening at 6:30. There appears to be some issues related to residents complaining about the lack of response by the fire department and no knowledge of meetings of any kind being held.
This is very concerning since we rely on RVFD to answer calls for fires and medical emergencies. We have been fortunate enough to have other VFDs respond to calls in our area, but we need to see what needs to be done to correct the problems within our own VFD. It does sound like they need volunteers – not only to respond to calls, but to also be active with the Board of Directors and basic organization. Let’s not wait until we have a disaster that could have been avoided. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
I have purposely avoided things that are going on in our federal government – just too much negative. I’ll catch up next week. We are seeing the new mayor of New York City is going totally Socialist like most of us expected. The governor of Minnesota has stepped out of a reelection bid because of all the fraud that is being found in the daycare industry in his state – thank God he was not elected vice president!
I don’t mind paying taxes to support the programs constitutionally designated to the federal government, but way too much has been moved from state responsibility to Washington. Government closest to the citizens is best and able to be better monitored. But even our local states, counties and towns take advantage of us if we don’t keep an eye on them!
I recently found out that we are paying TWO types of taxes included in our property taxes that go to our school system. One is for the county system and the other is the DISTRICT system. Here in Coosa County we only have ONE school system! The bulk of the money needs to be going to the classrooms and teachers – not to all the technology, computers and programs that are not teaching our children to read, write and do arithmetic. Even Bill Gates himself came out against Common Core Curriculum when he realized what a nightmare it would be. And his children were not allowed to use computers at home.
OK, this is the end of my rants for this week. God bless you all – and to all a good night!
