In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
Where, oh where, has this year gone? Here we are already a week into the last month of the year, and it seems like we just celebrated Independence Day!
I probably said this last year, but time certainly DOES go by faster the older we get. I wonder why that is! Is it because we are so busy with our day-to-day activities or is it because we sleep more?
I can plead guilty to both of those. I’m now in the stage of life that I can’t even keep up with what day of the week it is – even if I look at my calendar each morning.
I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It’s always a holiday I looked forward to because we had a huge family gathering in Jackson, Miss. Obviously with more than 30 people there we had an enormous amount of food, watched a lot of football, and some felt it necessary to go to the mall to shop. That probably sounds very familiar to most of you!
Times have changed since my parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles have all passed away. My cousins who I grew up with have scattered across the country so it’s hard to get together anymore. But I do receive wonderful invitations to join friends – and sometimes that’s even better than family!
Next year, God willing, I am going to Triple R even if I have to go alone! But I bet money I can find someone I know there to sit with!
Unfortunately, as most of us were giving thanks for our blessings, there were other families suffering from tragedies that occurred. Two patriotic National Guard soldiers were shot by someone who should not have ever been allowed into our country.
One is still fighting for his life and very much needs our continued prayers. The other died shortly after from her wounds, and her family also needs our prayers. There were other attacks, riots and murders that also occurred all over our country, and many of those were also because of people who should not have been walking the streets.
I really want to know why people complain about our law enforcement officers and blame them for the criminals who are continually allowed out of jail by the judicial system! I’ve asked this question before in the not-too-distant past, but it just continues on and on again. Why, when a crime is caught on a camera and it is obvious who committed the crime, are they allowed to post bail or even be released with NO bail? All they do is commit more crimes on our American citizens. Plus, so many of these criminals are not in our country legally, cannot read or understand English and are hired for jobs they have absolutely NO business having – like truck drivers!
We all have descendants in our families who immigrated to America at some point in time. That is how our country was populated and built. But there were very tight immigration procedures in place – did they have family who would sponsor them? Could they support themselves or have a trade that would benefit our country? Were they free of illnesses and diseases? They all had to pass very strict requirements coming through ONE location – Ellis Island – before they were approved to enter our country.
I feel sorry for people who are living in countries where they are abused, mistreated, or unable to improve their own lives. BUT that does not mean that they should all be allowed to enter our country with no intent of assimilating into our customs, language and laws. Too many are coming here as refugees, but insist on carrying on their old customs, which is what they were running from to start with!
None of us would even think about moving to a foreign country and insist those people learn English, treat us just as we had been treated here in America and provide us all the rights and privileges of their own citizens. Every country has its own history, language, government, education system, and laws, so why would people come here without the idea of adopting our ways?
It’s past time for us to tighten our immigration standards to protect our American citizens above all others. We should not be allowing large numbers of immigrants to come in and still show their loyalty to the old country instead of to the United States of America. Flying and marching with flags from other countries should not be allowed. Yes, we all acknowledge our heritages and ancestors – good or bad – but our priorities and loyalty should be to the country where we live – the greatest country on the face of the earth, America the Beautiful.
Our country is not perfect by any means, but it is better than most any other country in the world. It is up to US to correct our problems, put more thought and diligence into voting to uphold our Constitution and laws, elect people who recognize the excellence of our country, and support the people who want to see the United States of America continue to prosper and provide safety to all our citizens.
Please continue to pray not only for the people who are struggling with tragedies, illnesses, deaths, and difficulties, but also for those leading our country, state and local areas. Ask God to take over their hearts and minds and guide them to put America first!
Now, go get that Christmas shopping done!
