On Saturday, October 4, at approximately 3:40 a.m., special agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation launched an investigation into an officer‐involved shooting involving an officer with the Birmingham Police Department.
The incident occurred when an altercation ensued between two individuals in the 400 block of
Second Avenue North in Birmingham, located within Jefferson County.
One of the individuals; later identified as Quantez O. Johnson, 51, of Birmingham; presented a firearm during the altercation.
A uniformed Birmingham Police Department officer was working a departmentally approved off-duty security job for the business when the altercation occurred. The officer discharged his weapon, striking Johnson.
The officer and no other individuals were injured over the course of the incident. Johnson was transported to University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital for medical treatment.
Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be
turned over to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
