An Alexander City man was arrested Sunday after allegedly committing burglary and stealing items from storage units.
Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that on July 13, Deputy Brown responded to a burglary in progress relating to self-storage units in the Stewartville area.
Brown began walking the area to see if he could find an opening in the fence and if any storage building locks had been cut. Ultimately Brown saw that the fence had been cut, as well as some locks.
Hammond reported that Brown began clearing the area of any intruders. While searching, he saw an individual lying in the grass with numerous items from some storage units around him.
After detaining him, Brown found that 12 locks had been cut on storage units, and two victims came forward regarding items stolen from their units.
Willis Lafay Norris, 30 years old, was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree theft of property and possession of burglary tools.
Sheriff’s Office investigators took over investigating the case, and the next day they determined that additional charges of third-degree burglary, fourth-degree theft of property, third-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree criminal trespass were also warranted.
As of press time, Norris’s bond was set at $17,500. He remained in custody at the Coosa County Jail awaiting trial.
All items allegedly stolen from the storage units were recovered.
Anyone who suspects or observes illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
