Local historical organization awards two scholarships

Edmund W. Pettus Camp #574, Sons of Confederate Veterans, awarded two $500 scholarships to area high school seniors.
The winners are Anabelle Gordon from Benjamin Russell High School and Zana McWhorter from Horseshoe Bend High School.
High school seniors were asked to write a short essay. This year’s topic was to explain why Southern States voted to leave the Union, including their position that the States are sovereign; the Union is a voluntary compact; and it is up to the citizens of each State to decide whether or not to remain in the compact.
Pettus Camp members appreciate the efforts of these two excellent students and wish them the best in their future educational endeavors.
