Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Hello, February! According to the news Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter. However, Alabama’s Sand Mountain Sam and Birmingham Bill, neither saw their shadows, therefore we are going to have an early spring. I agree with them as there are buttercups breaking through the ground.
Another tradition or old wives’ tale is if it thunders in February, it will frost in April. My daddy always had mama write on the calendar the days it thundered in February. Most times we had frost on or near those days in April. Not saying it’s true, but mark it on your calendars and we’ll see come April.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for March 1. That is the next Bingo night for the Richville Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, March 1, so make plans to come out for a good time. It starts at 6 p.m., and you play 20 games for $10. There are a variety of prizes to choose from, so everyone who wins can find something.
January saw the arrival of a new great-granddaughter, while February marks the birthday of one of my other great-granddaughters. I have decided that while grandchildren are great, great-grands are even more special. I love being a grandma and great-grandma. Maybe I’ll make great-great-grandma, who knows, but I can look forward to the thought.
The free tax clinic at Rockford started this Wednesday and will continue each Wednesday through April 9. It is located at the Rockford Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on U.S. Highway 231 north of the four-way stop. Someone will be there from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling the Alexander City location at 256-234-0347. Be sure to tell them you want an appointment for the Rockford location. Walk-ins are welcome, also.
The Coosa County Historical Society’s first quarter meeting will be on Sunday, February 23, at the Rockford Senior Center at 2 p.m. We have several items for discussion and encourage members to attend to vote on these matters. You can mail a check to P.O. Box 5, Rockford, AL 35136 to join or renew for $15. Please include your email to receive the newsletter or add $5 to receive printed copies, as well as your address.
Make plans to attend the training series “Conversations: A Simple Approach to Sharing the Gospel,” hosted by Union Baptist Church. This training will be put on by the Gideons, led by Scott Sparks, on February 5, 12, and 19 at 6 p.m. It is open to anyone interested in learning to share the Gospel.
This month my Bible verses are on love since February is known as the “love” month. This week’s verse, while short, is very important. I Corinthians 16:14 reads, “Do everything in love.”
If we all followed that command, life and the world would be a lot different. Love is the essence of a Christian. So many times, we act in anger or with hatred, forgetting that God loves us. Let’s strive to stop and think about our words and actions first with love in our hearts and see what a difference it makes. Smile at others, be kind, and remember to say please and thank you.
Be in prayer for all those that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
