Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
First hurricane of the year, late to start, but not record-breaking late as it tied with the previous latest hurricane; yes very late in the season.
We experienced no structural damage; however, we did have a large tree fall on a gate, but once I cut it from the root ball the gate did bounce back enough to keep the animals in the pasture and out of my front lawn, so all is well.
With the announcement from Big John’s Liquidation to move their business out of downtown Equality because of the lack of foot traffic, and specifically local shoppers, I have decided to not invest or risk any more of my money into expanding Jenny’s General in being a grocer of organically grown produce at reasonable prices.
We have found for the past eight years in business local Equality residents don’t shop locally. We tried fresh produce back in 2019 after Equality residents asked for it, but they never shopped with us, and price was not the reason because we made sure our prices were lower than Walmart.
Quality Food Mart is the only business that does well. That is what locals want; that is what locals shop other than driving 7 miles in either direction to get to Dollar General.
And after all the years of trying to support the community with healthy options, live music, plants, etc. we are not even sure we will keep the buildings and will start looking to put them up for sale, which will take years since they sat on the market for years before we purchased them, but Equality is not a small-business supporting town, and I am tired of trying to support a town that doesn’t want us.
Community activities that are available in Equality and Nixburg area:
- The Equality quilting group meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every Friday starting at 10 a.m.
- Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting on the fourth Thursday of every month.
- Equality Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser on the first Saturday of every month.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-794-3801 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
