How exciting – the Coosa County Animal Shelter is now open! Following a successful open house Saturday, the shelter officially opened on Monday, January 30.
The shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. With its official opening also comes a new phone number, and the shelter can now be reached at 256-369-1222.
So many are thrilled to now have this valuable asset in our county, and it has been needed for quite some time. The facility looks great, and those who toured the building Saturday could see how much work and heart has been put into the shelter. I overheard numerous comments about how nice the shelter is and how happy people are to have it open and available for Coosa County.
It didn’t take long for the shelter to receive its first resident, as Monday morning a stray dog found in the Stewartville community was taken to the shelter. While not available for adoption just yet, we wanted to feature Scarlet as the featured Pet of the Week as this special girl is the first resident of the Coosa County Animal Shelter.
Scarlet is an approximate 2-year-old chocolate lab who is on a mandatory 7-day stray hold at this time to allow her owners the opportunity to come reclaim her. This sweet and precious girl is pregnant, and if she is not reclaimed by her owners then she and her puppies will be looking for a foster or forever home in the near future.
Scarlet is a beautiful girl with those soulful chocolate lab eyes. If she is your dog, please contact the shelter to reclaim. For more information, contact the shelter at 256-369-1222.
As of Tuesday Scarlet was still the only resident at the new shelter, so at least if she does have her puppies there soon it will be a quiet and calm environment at this time.
The shelter’s directors and staff, all volunteers, are truly appreciative for all the donations and supplies they have received. At this time their biggest need is puppy food, as they will be feeding that to Scarlet for some time as she prepares to birth and feed her puppies. You can call the shelter for more information, or puppy food can be taken to the shelter during its regular business hours at the shelter in Stewartville, located at 5520 Coosa County Road 41; Sylacauga, 35151; next to the Water Authority building.
February is Responsible Pet Ownership Month, which will tie in perfectly with the opening of a new animal shelter. Next week I’ll review some guidelines for responsible pet ownership that are important to keep in mind when adopting or getting a pet.
