While students and parents alike are preparing for the new school year starting next week, the Board of Education has been conducting business to also prepare for the start of a new school year, including approving personnel and other matters.
During its July 21 meeting, with Board member Sharon Coffman absent, the board unanimously approved two certified recommendations. Those were for Jennifer Trussell as an elementary education teacher and Lynn Butler as an elementary school special education teacher pending Alabama certification, with both of those being for the 2022-2023 school year.
The board also unanimously approved a contract with Sign Language Interpreting Services LLC. to provide an American sign language interpreter for a special needs student.
Also in preparation for the new school year, the board unanimously approved the 2022-2023 Code of Conduct for students, faculty handbooks for the elementary and high school, and student handbook for the high school students.
Additionally, the board unanimously approved the 2022-2023 Salary Schedules reflecting the incremental state mandated raise for certified personnel, a 4% state mandated raise for support personnel, TEAMS salary schedule, and supplemental schedule with an increase in substitute pay.
The board also unanimously approved job descriptions for a career coach and a workforce development and career and technical education coordinator.
In other business, the board received two bids for motor oil, with those being $18.09 per gallon submitted by Allen Oil and $19.21 per gallon submitted by WH Thomas Oil. The board unanimously approved accepting the low bid from Allen Oil Company of Sylacauga for motor oil, effective from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2022.
Additionally, the board unanimously approved auctioning some surplus items through GovDeals.com. Those items deemed no longer of value to the board included bleachers from Joe N. Belyeu Gymnasium, student desks and chairs, laptop carts, laptop docking stations, wireless slates, old iPads, and iPad carts.
Also during the July 21 meeting, the board unanimously approved and adopted a resolution establishing districts for members of the Board of Education.
In part the resolution reads, “Whereas the Coosa County Commission, whose members also run in districts identically numbered to those of the Board of Education, has apportioned the districts according to the last federal decennial census for the county using the principle of equal representation… now therefore be it resolved that the district lines set by the Coosa County Commission shall be the district lines set for the members of the Coosa County Board of Education.”
During that meeting it was also reported that the annual bus inspection was completed on April 1, and of the 29 buses inspected no buses were found to have any major deficiencies.
Additionally, with all members present, the board also unanimously approved multiple personnel matters during its called meeting on July 14.
The board approved three resignations, effective immediately, for elementary school counselor Mallory Redmond, elementary school special education teacher Amy Stark and high school general social science teacher Brittany Bailey.
In certified recommendations at that meeting the board unanimously approved Shundell Russaw as high school physical education teacher and Cassidy Diamond as high school general social science teacher. In non-certified recommendations, pending completion of all requirements the board unanimously approved Marlee Byrd as a special education paraprofessional and Justine Clark as a paraprofessional.
The board also unanimously approved the voluntary transfer of Deanna Blake from elementary school general education paraprofessional to special education paraprofessional for the 2022-2023 school year.
Further, the board unanimously approved Tiffiny Hardnett and Jessica Boyd as substitute teachers/aides for the 2022-2023 school year, pending completion of all requirements.
Regarding athletics, the board also unanimously approved numerous coaching positions for the upcoming school year and Debi Stover as Diamond Doll sponsor for the baseball program for the upcoming school year.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Coosa County Board of Education will be held at 4 p.m. August 25.
