A two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, has claimed the life of an Auburn man.
Hugh W. Smith, 82, was critically injured when the 1996 Toyota Tacoma he was driving was struck by the 2009 Lexus IS250 driven by Cheaney M. Keel, 23, of Alexander City. After the initial impact, the Toyota left the roadway and struck a tree.
Hugh W. Smith was initially transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and was later transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. On Tuesday, July 14, Smith succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased while at the hospital.
Keel was injured and transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment.
Wanda A. Smith, 79, of Auburn, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was also injured and transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment.
The crash occurred on U.S. Highway 280 near the 93-mile marker, approximately two miles southeast of Camp Hill, in Tallapoosa County.
Nothing further is available as troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
