Online information shows that this week’s primary election turnout for Coosa County was 29.1 percent of eligible voters – including both Democrats and Republicans. An older edition of the News reported that the voter turnout in the 2022 primary election was 33.9 percent of all potential voters. Come on, Coosa! When not even a third of the people who should vote come out to vote, there is a BIG problem.
And this election determined local offices. Shame on non-voters!
Voting in Coosa is a simple and friendly process. Our elections are secure, and little has changed in recent decades. Elections are announced well in advance over many different media.
Elections are a normal process in our society. So I don’t think voter information about elections is the real problem.
The two-party system may be a part of the problem. None of the Democrats campaigned, and most of the Republicans spat back and forth (not the locals, bless their hearts) until we were sick of the whole mess. How many people would rather tune out and play solitaire on their phones?
Neither of these campaign tactics is about leadership. And I think leadership is the heart of the problem.
