Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
May seems to be moving faster than I want, and now the heat has come, and I am not ready for that either.
I keep hearing this will be a very hot summer, but aren’t all Alabama summers hot? I just know that as I grow older I tolerate the summer heat less and less, so was trying to take advantage of the cooler spring temperatures to get things done around the yard and garden before the summer heat made it miserable for me. I still have a few things that need to be done.
Work on Jenny’s General’s roof will be replaced starting next week, I hope. Also, some cleanup around the property. Maybe more folks will want to stop and shop once it is brightened up a bit as I really would like to retire from my full-time job and focus just on the store. Or hire someone to help with the store while I put in a few more years at my job and retire more financially securely, if that is possible in this current economy.
Sequel Campbell of 3 Moon Harvest is holding Certified Family Herbalist Classes, one Saturday each month from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a half-hour break. Those that attend all seven courses will receive certification.
First course is on May 23 at Jenny’s General Store and will focus on herbs best for the digestive system. Class size is small so if interested register and pay $60 course fee by May 20.
Don’t forget to pick up the Boston butt and/or ribs that you ordered from Equality Volunteer Fire Department for their Memorial Day fundraiser tomorrow, May 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire department lodge.
Community activities that are available that you can support:
- The Equality quilting group meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale is held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9 in Nixburg.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every Friday starting at 10 a.m.
- Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held Thursday, May 28, starting at 6:30 p.m.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
