Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
First of May! School is almost over, gardens are getting planted, and people are starting to plan summer vacations.
Graduation at Central High School will be on May 19 at 7 p.m. Also, that same day is the Alabama primary election with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. It’s important to get out and vote so you have a say in our government. If you don’t vote, don’t complain!
There are many positions up for election statewide, so this is an important election. Most of the county offices have no opponents. However, the offices for commissioners District 4 and 5 have choices, as well as School Board member for District 4. So again, I encourage you to go out and vote. If you haven’t registered to vote, you still have until May 4.
Richville Volunteer Fire Department had a great turnout for Bingo last weekend with around 40 people. There will not be Bingo in May. I’ll update on the date in June in a later column.
Don’t forget to get your order in for those wonderful Boston Butts they sell for Memorial Day. So, see any fire department member and get on their list. They are $35, and they usually sell out ahead of time.
The Old Rock Jail will be open this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be closed for Mother’s Day and the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 free. Plans are underway for it to be open during Rockford’s 250 celebration in June. More about that later.
The Historical Society had a good turnout for its quarterly meeting at The Old Rockford School. We enjoyed hearing from Chip Gates, historian of the Lake Mitchell HOBO Association.
They now have a website which you can find at CoosaCountyHistory.com. Check it out. It’s an ongoing project with new material added regularly. If you have any historic photos or information you would like to contribute, please email it to coosacountyhistoricalsociety@gmail.com.
This week my Bible verse is about new beginnings. Isaiah 43:18-19 reads, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
As believers we have to quit dwelling on our past mistakes and failures, as well as past success. If we cling to previous experiences, whether good or bad, we will never move forward to discover new opportunities. We have to acknowledge the past, but then move on.
God promises to prepare a way forward for us even when we think it is impossible. We need to be ready to pay attention to God’s promise for a new future. While we have to know where we have been to know where to go forward, we can’t dwell on it. That just creates stagnation with no future.
Be in prayer for those that have lost loved ones in our community, as well as those that are ill. Remember the shut-ins in our community, as well. They don’t just need our prayers, but can benefit from visits, also, even if it’s just a phone call.
