Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I am in need of a cheese cave, or a root cellar. I had plans to dig one out and put one of my sheds on it which was going to be my food preservation shed so that all the canning and dehydrating heat stayed out of the house, but that has been on hold because of other higher priorities.
But the tiny fridge I was using as a cheese cave is beyond capacity, and the milk fridge for storing my milk is no longer staying cold enough, and I had a gallon and a half spoil on me last week. Why do hobbies get so expensive sometimes?
At the moment my higher priorities include a new roof on Jenny’s General and additional marketing to increase foot traffic so the store can actually pay the bill instead of my personal savings.
I am investigating affordable options, but it still is going to hit the store and my savings substantially. I suppose this is one of those struggle times that either my business dies or thrives; out of crisis comes innovation, or at least that is my hope.
You may have noticed some changes to Jenny’s General Store’s social media activity. We have hired a local social media manager who has really brought some innovative changes to the Facebook page, as well as a few changes to the store. Keep an eye out for more to come in the next few months, or longer.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department will be selling Boston butts and a rack of St. Louis ribs for $35 each over Memorial Day weekend. Distribution day will be May 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire department lodge. Please support our local volunteer fire department with this great fund-raising activity.
Other community activities that are available that you can support:
- The Equality quilting group which meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 at Jenny’s General Store. We do more than quilt; some embroider, crochet and other needle arts. And yes, we still meet every week!
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale is held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9, in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every first and third Friday starting at 10 a.m.
- Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held Thursday, April 23, starting at 6:30 p.m.
- First Saturday VFD fundraiser is May 2.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
