Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I don’t like rumors; I like to know if it is fact or just speculation. I wrote before about wanting a small town where I can walk or ride my bicycle to shop, which includes a grocer.
And nowadays small towns are tricked into thinking that Dollar General is the answer even though they rarely fulfill all their promises to the communities and only offer cheap and highly processed junk food, over processed pet food and chemical laden hygiene products. I want locally owned small businesses in my small town.
And here is where the rumor comes in; one of the employees at the corner gas station said that the owner is looking to purchase the red cottage at the corner of County Road 33 and 259 to put a new store in.
This is not ideal for me; it may be locally owned, but I doubt it will be a grocer, or baker, or anything healthy and beneficial to our community. It will likely be another convenience store offering cheap highly processed junk food marked up for pure profit or another package store.
I know change is inevitable; however, I was hoping for more like-minded business investors in our area who really wanted to be part of the community and be a benefit to the community while they benefit from doing business in the community. Or am I just being a dreamer? I am really hoping this is just rumor and not actual fact; adding it to my prayer list to squash it anyway.
Coosa Fancy Farms on County Road 14 has spring CSA available starting April 11 through June 13. It is $250 for 10 weeks of fresh, spray-free, locally grown leafy greens and veggies picked up at their farm.
Each week CSA members will receive an email letting them know what items are available from the farm for the week with a “set” CSA list that they can feel free to customize up to the Friday before pickup.
Equality Volunteer Fire Department will be selling Boston butts and a rack of St Louis ribs for $35 each over Memorial Day weekend. Distribution day will be May 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire department lodge next to Quality Food Mart. Please support our local volunteer fire department with this great fund-raising activity.
If interested in learning more about herbs and their uses, certified community herbalist Sequel Campbell of Three Moon Harvest is holding an upcoming class on April 16 from 10 to 12 and will feature spring greens dandelion, cleavers and chickweed. Sequel will bring tea tastings and edibles to enjoy during the course.
