Special to the News
My name is Sharon Coffman. I would like to announce my candidacy for re-election for Board of Education, District 4, Coosa County.
I have been privileged to serve on the Board for almost six years. I am a retired elementary school teacher with a master’s degree from Auburn University. I taught in Coosa County and then in Tallapoosa County at Dadeville Elementary School as “Mrs. Vinson.” I have two adult sons and three grandchildren.
After retiring from the classroom, I moved to Georgia and served as executive director for a Keep America Beautiful affiliate in Polk County. I led our board and volunteers to develop active relationships with our local governments, schools, businesses, civic clubs, churches, and other community organizations throughout the county.
As director, I started an education program which included recycling in all the schools, as well as regular events for litter cleanups and beautification projects. As a part of this, I formed a service fraternity for the high schools which had more than 100 students actively involved. This helped me tremendously in learning how to work with, and for, a community.
After moving back to Alabama, I worked as a naturalist at the Alabama Nature Center in Millbrook. I enjoyed leading students from preschool through twelfth grade on field trips. As we hiked through the varied ecosystems there, I taught them about the flora and fauna and let them experience firsthand many elements of nature such as creeks and critters!
I’m an active member of First Baptist Church in Alexander City, where I attend with my husband, Burt Coffman, and participate in several ministries. I have been involved in various church ministries and music since accepting Christ at age 15. We also volunteer in fundraisers and in other ways support our local Equality Volunteer Fire Department.
I believe my diverse background, my love for children and my belief in the power of education qualify me greatly to serve on our Board of Education another six years. I want to continue to support our teachers, staff and community’s concerns while ensuring discretion and transparency in all.
My personal goals for our school system are to offer pathways for every student to succeed in a safe and healthy environment, and to challenge them to form new goals at every opportunity. I want to continue, and increase, our students’ exposure to real world careers which will empower them to make the best choices possible when they leave high school.
As new businesses move into Coosa County and Alabama, I hope to do all we can to get them more involved with our schools. We have amazing staff and students, and with continued support from all sources, we can do this!
I would greatly appreciate your vote for me for District 4 Board of Education. For comments or questions, feel free to reach out to me at mistletoe2003@gmail.com.
