Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
It has been so bitterly cold that I have not been able to function very well. We live in an old house that was not designed to endure bitter cold other than five fireplaces.
We have been trying to update and renovate, but with retirement in our midst with fixed incomes we have been doing it room by room to stay out of debt, and needless to say the house still is drafty and challenging to keep warm. Weeks like this past one make me want to move much further south.
Talk about moving, as many of you know properties in the area have exchanged hands, and we have several new neighbors in Equality. I have not met them yet, but hear two families have moved in and are attending the Equality Methodist Church, and a third is in the process of establishing her home here in Equality.
Jenny’s General Store needs a new roof. Praying for a miracle to pay for it and another reason we are considering just selling the property. The store was to be my retirement, but locals do not shop locally so there is not enough business to pay for itself, let alone support us in retirement, and now with the added expense of replacing the leaking roof seems prudent to selling the property to someone who can put something in that locals actually will support, like a Dollar General.
Please continue to support ongoing activities in our community such as:
- The Equality quilting group which meets every Monday evening from 6 to 8 at Jenny’s General Store.
- Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale, held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9.
- Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every first and third Friday starting at 10 a.m.
- First Saturday Equality Volunteer Fire Department fundraising event is February 7 starting at 8 a.m., with lunch at 11 a.m., rummage sale, bake sale, breakfast and lunch for donations.
- Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held on Thursday, February 26, starting at 6:30 p.m., and Dave Dial will be preparing food for a donation, or you are welcome to bring a dish to pass.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
