Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
School is back in session! So, watch for those big yellow buses stopping and kids crossing the road. It seems like once you come back from Christmas vacation, the school year is on a downhill slide, especially for those seniors and their families.
Don’t forget the first 2026 bingo at Richville Volunteer Fire Department will be tomorrow, Saturday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m. So come out and support your fire department and have fun doing it. They will also have concessions.
The Coosa County Historical Society quarterly meeting will be held on Sunday, January 25, at 2 p.m. at the Rockford Senior Center. We have a special guest speaker, Chip Gates, historian of the Lake Mitchell HOBO Association. So, make plans to attend, and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served. More details to follow in next week’s column.
The start of a new year is always a challenge. Most people make resolutions, including me. I try to make mine something that I want to accomplish this year, not just the same every year. Sometimes, I carry over a resolution with a little tweak to help attain the goal since I didn’t the prior year.
One of my resolutions last year was to read through the entire Bible. I failed! However, I have made that resolution again this year with a different plan to study it. The old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” is what I’m doing. Also, if we don’t succeed the first time, why should we continue the same process if it didn’t work! So, a new year, a new plan. I have some personal resolutions that I don’t share, which I’m sure each of you do, also.
My Bible verse for this week is a personal favorite, II Timothy 2:15, which reads, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.”
What is diligence? According to the dictionary it means to have or show care and conscientiousness in one’s work or duties. In the Bible, it’s an earnest effort in all tasks, spiritual or practical, which reflects a commitment to honor God which leads to blessings, success and spiritual growth.
This verse places a huge responsibility on Christians. Studying the Bible is different than just reading it. While reading is good, we need to study the verses and the context of what it says. So, in summary, this verse says to study, not just read our Bibles, so we can explain God’s Word correctly and seek God’s approval over man.
This is the verse I am applying to my reading of the Bible this year, not just to read so many verses but to study what I read. I may not finish reading the entire Bible this year, but I’ll have a better understanding of what I read. That should be the goal when you open your Bible; ask God to reveal His Word to you.
Be in prayer for the Becky Harris and Margaret Barrett families as they passed away this week. Both have many connections to the Richville community and had been members of Providence Baptist before moving away.
