Constitution Day is recognized on September 17, the day in which the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia agreed to and signed the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
Every year Central High School seniors receive a personal pocket U.S. Constitution to use throughout their government course and to keep as a guidebook in life.
After analyzing the meaning of each of the lines in the Preamble, senior government students worked on memorizing the Preamble. The seniors then visited each of the elementary classrooms to lead the young students in reciting the Preamble.
The seniors were impressed by how bright the young students were. They had great questions, and some of them were even able to recite the Preamble themselves. The elementary students received a Constitution Day sticker for their efforts in trying to memorize the Preamble.
The on-campus senior government students also appeared on the Cougar Broadcasting Network (CBN) reciting the Preamble for Constitution Day. Thank you to the CBN staff for filming and Library Media Specialist Mrs. Hughes for creating a special Constitution Day broadcast featuring the seniors.
Senior government students will continue their analysis of the U.S. Constitution, including each of the seven articles and the 27 amendments. A culminating activity will be a comprehensive essay in which the seniors write about the principles of government embedded in the U.S. Constitution, using the articles and amendments as evidence of each of the principles.
