Historic event scheduled for Cottage Grove community in Coosa County

The J. D. Thompson Alumni members invite you to attend the unveiling of the historical marker to commemorate the Coosa County Training School, in the Cottage Grove community.
The event will happen on September 26, at 10 a.m., at the elementary school building located at 1854 Coosa County Road 93, Kellyton, 35089.
The school was founded in 1899 by John R. Savage, and in 1915 the Coosa County Training School became one of the first African American county training schools in Alabama. Also in 1915, noted President of Tuskegee Institute Dr. Booker T. Washington and his wife, Margaret, visited the school.
On September 26, 2003, the school was listed in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
Please join us as we celebrate this historic event. After the ceremony, light refreshments will be served in the elementary building, where you will be able to tour the classrooms and learn more about the phenomenal history of the school and the community.
The bell tower located on the school grounds in front of the former J.D. Thompson High School building is a memorial for the school’s founder, John R. Savage. The C.C.T.S./J.D.
