In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
I’m a little behind on the news this week. I had a medical scare with my 14-year-old Yorkie, Harley. Still not sure what caused it, but I was afraid I was going to lose him.
With great care from my vet, Dr. B at Kowaliga Veterinary Care, he has bounced back, but all of my attention was on him instead of the outside world. I’m sure many of you who are parents of four-legged babies can understand the fear when you don’t know what is wrong or what to do. I have started to wonder if God was not telling me to forget all the unpacking I’ve been trying to do and pay attention to my baby boy! If so, He got my attention!
Some of the great news that I have read and/or heard about here in Coosa County is again exciting! Thanks to Jamie and Jason Thornton Kelly’s Crossroads is open again at the intersection of Ala. Hwy. 22 and Coosa Co. Rd. 29. Their grand opening was last Saturday, and there was a great turnout. Check out their menu on Facebook – breakfast, deli sandwiches!
The west side of Coosa County now has access to food and miscellaneous supplies again, plus I understand they are researching the possibility of getting gasoline available if at all possible!
Also, we now have breakfast available in Rockford three more days a week. Our Daily Bread has opened for breakfast and lunch on Monday-Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Again, check out their menu on Facebook. Sandra Wilson is sharing her family background in operating a restaurant.
They are located in the green metal building directly behind “The Coosa County News” building and south of the County Courthouse. They have seating for about 26 people. They will help spread the availability of good food in Rockford, but not compete with the already established restaurants’ menus.
I have not heard an update on the new barbecue restaurant’s opening, but they are steady working on it. It will be in the old Eagles Roost building across from the newspaper and next door to Alabama One. I believe this is another restaurant that is owner operated with a history of restaurant service.
Can’t wait to see what their menu will be and their operating hours! Stay tuned!
We are still waiting to hear the opening date of the new hardware store that Chris Crumbley will be opening in the same green metal building where Our Daily Bread is, but he thinks it will probably be September before he is ready to open. He’s open to suggestions from folks on what they would like to see him stock. He will not have lumber, but plans on carrying plumbing and electrical supplies, as well as some tools – something along the lines of a scaled-down Russell-Do-It.
Can you just imagine how much time and money will be saved when we can run to Rockford if we need something instead of having to go outside Coosa County if we need parts or tools? We now have to go to Sylacauga, Alexander City, Clanton, or Wetumpka where we support THEIR tax base instead of our own. But now we can measure the distance from where we live and choose the most economical option!
Lt. Dan’s is still open as far as I know in the old Toodlums location in Hanover. I’m just not sure of the hours and/or menu. I’ve heard that hamburgers when Beverly Burks is cooking!
I have personally eaten breakfast from Kelly’s Crossroads and Our Daily Bread – and I’ll be going back to both. And remember – we still have Triple R Café and El Vaqueros 2 Mex Grill here in Rockford. If you go hungry it’s your fault!
The old NAPA building south of town is being cleaned out for the new business that will locate there. We know an oil company of some kind is coming in, but we don’t know the rest of the details yet. I’m sure it will be another business that will provide revenue to the town and the county and provide some type of service for our community.
A reminder for all of you who are on a limited budget. Manna Ministries at Rockford Baptist Church does food drops on the third Monday of every month from 9 a.m. – noon. You are able to fill out your own grocery list based on the things that are available, plus extras in the way of meats, fresh vegetables and fruit are added if available.
This is not meant to feed a family for the month, but it will help stretch the budget to the end of the month when most income is received. You do need to plan on being there for an hour or longer because your order is processed in numerical order and hand selected for you.
While you wait we have breakfast snacks, coffee and water available, and you can visit with the other people who are there. We try to make it an opportunity to also meet people you don’t know or reconnect with people you might not have seen in a while. And remember, this is not a government-operated program – this is provided by donations from individuals and corporations who realize the importance of helping our neighbors. Paperwork is minimal based on the requirements of the Heart of Alabama Food Bank.
Also, this next Tuesday Rockford Baptist Church will be having our monthly Community Dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A free meal is served, and, again, the purpose is bringing our communities together. We have people from all over the county, people who do and do not participate in the Food Drop and people who are and are not members of our church. Please come join us for a meal and meet more people.
God Bless you all!
