Heritage Hall Museum and Art Center in Talladega hosts an exhibit of 40 art quilts entitled “Tradition to Innovation,” a rare opportunity to see never-before-exhibited works by Alabama textile artist Nancy Goodman.
This stunning exhibit celebrates the fusion of traditional quilting with original artistry.
Nancy Goodman has emerged as one of Alabama’s pre-eminent textile artists of the 21st century. She was born in New England, moved to Colorado as a teenager, to California for college, to New Mexico as a young adult, and finally to Alabama where she has lived for more than 30 years. Her quilting style reflects the artistic influence of the breadth of the U.S.A.
Her quilts are improvisational works of art, full of color, pattern and texture. They are original designs constructed without patterns or templates. Her use of intense color is the driving force in her quilts, allowing the textile pieces to light up a room.
Keeping true to the definition of a quilt as “layers of fabric kept in place by lines of stitching,” Nancy’s decorative quilting patterns are as intricate as are the pieced tops. The resulting textures in the finished works are an essential element in her unique artistry.
Through decades of study and experimentation, Nancy Goodman has a clearly defined “voice.” Her work is recognizable and has gained her a national reputation and following.
Recent prestigious quilt shows that have shown her work include QuiltCon 2023 (Atlanta), International Quilt Festival 2022 (Houston, award winner), The Fletcher Exhibit 2022 – Socially and Politically Engaged Art (Johnson City, Tenn.), International Quilt Festival 2022, Art Nouveau, Craft as Art (Long Beach, Calif.), and Northwest Quilting Expo 2022 (Portland, Ore.).
Goodman is a true, original artist. This exhibit will serve as inspiration to all who see it.
The “Tradition to Innovation” exhibit will be open April 11 through May 31 at Heritage Hall Museum, located at 200 South Street E., Talladega, 35160.
