A Kellyton man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Alexander City that occurred at approximately 8:44 p.m. Sunday, December 29.
Derek Jonathan McVey, 36, was fatally injured when the 2016 Kia Sorento he was driving left the roadway and struck a fence, a mailbox and several trees before overturning.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, McVey was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The crash occurred on Campground Road near Kodiak Lane, approximately four miles northeast of Alexander City, in Tallapoosa County.
While ALEA initially reported that McVey was from Alexander City, his obituary stated that he resided in the Kellyton community, where numerous family members also reside.
A 2006 graduate of Horseshoe Bend High School and native of Alexander City, McVey is survived by three children, his mother, siblings, and numerous other family members.
His funeral will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home, with visitation from 5-8 p.m. today. As McVey was an Alabama fan, his family encourages those attending the service to wear their favorite Crimson Tide apparel.
