Special to the News
Coosa Upward enjoyed another great season as youth played flag football and cheered while reinforcing character development through Bible lessons on the life of David.
David’s life serves as a positive example to our youth because it reminds us that we can trust God even when things are not going well, how to be a good friend and the importance of keeping promises. We believe the character of our youth, developed through a relationship with Jesus and knowledge of His Word, far outweighs anything our kids will ever do on a ball field, but sports provides a fun opportunity to learn both athletic skills and character.
The league is hosted by the Weogufka Family Worship Center, but is supported through a partnership with multiple Coosa County churches, including those who served as Game Day Host churches this season: New Providence Baptist Church, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, New Home Baptist Church, Providence Baptist Church, Peace and Goodwill, Hatchett Springs Worship Center, and Sardis Baptist Church.
Coosa Upward is completely staffed by unpaid volunteers and financed through community donations.
Registration costs are kept at a low $50 for participants thanks to generous donations from the community, including Bronze level donors: Tom and Pinky Reichart, Infinity Real Estate, Empowered to Conquer, New Providence Baptist Church, and Central Alabama Fire Protection.
Silver level donors include the Town of Rockford, Albert and Peggy Palmer, Tommy and Nancy Thornton, New Home Baptist Church, Alabama One, Kellyton Fire Department, and Providence Baptist Church.
Gold level donors include Nelson Electric, Coosa County Family Dentistry, Accordia Health, Home Depot Sylacauga, Phillip and Paige Alverson, and the Goodwater Fire Department.
Platinum level donors include the Weogufka Family Worship Center and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Last but not least, thanks to our coaches who are the backbone of the league working with our youth on athletic and spiritual development every week at practices: Cameron Lackey, Jessica Skates, Kimberly Crowe, Matthew Reams, Sheldon Hutcherson, Michael Jones, Andrew Hammond, Andrew McKenzie, Charles Tillman, Chris Crumbley, and Marcus Castleberry.
Thank you, also, to our officials Michael Howell and Alex Williams, scoreboard operator Re’Niyah Gibbs, concession manager Stephanie Tillman, social media coordinator Lynn Castleberry, financial account manager Megan Ward, picture day Wanda Young, opening and closing ceremony Hannah Hyatt, and the Town of Rockford for the use of its practice field.
We also want to express our love for our Upward families who step up to help out whenever they see a need and help to create a positive youth sports environment that aims to uplift our youth and volunteers.
Details about the upcoming basketball and cheer season registration will be shared in the next couple of weeks. Practices are tentatively scheduled to start mid-December and games to start mid-January. Stay informed by joining us on Facebook at Upward Coosa Sports.
