ALDOT has opened the new Pump House Road Bridge to traffic as work continues to widen U.S. Highway 280 between Homewood and I-459.
As of Friday night, March 6, traffic shifted from the old bridge onto the first phase of the new structure over Highway 280.
In November, crews closed lanes to install the first three of five girders for the new span.
The next bridge replacement phase, and continued Highway 280 widening below, requires the previous bridge’s demolition
Beginning Sunday, March 8, at 7 p.m., the contractor used their ongoing nighttime closures through Thursday, March 12, to start removing the old bridge’s decking. All lanes were open each following morning at 6 a.m.
Demolition work will continue during similar nightly lane closures between March 15-19.
Then during the weekend of March 20-22, weather permitting, crews will close all lanes of Highway 280 traffic at Pump House Road to complete the demolition.
These closures will mirror those used to install the initial girders in November.
The widened design of the highway, which hosts about 100,000 motorists daily, is set to open to traffic by October 1.
We would like to thank the public for its patience as we continue to work to improve Highway 280 for the future.
