A Goodwater man was arrested on drug- and assault-related charges late last month following a phone call.
Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that on January 24, Deputy Parker overheard Goodwater Police Department reporting that it had received a call from Clay County dispatch regarding a rolling domestic violence situation headed into Coos County.
The phone line was still open in the vehicle, unknown to the male driver, allowing dispatch and deputies to hear the conversation inside the vehicle. The call was relayed by dispatch, and law enforcement officers heard the threats being made on the other end of the line.
Parker responded to assist and ultimately made the traffic stop. Goodwater officers Mitchell and Hammond then arrived on the scene.
The law enforcement officers approached the vehicle and asked the subject what was going on. It was reported that the female passenger was crying and appeared fearful.
The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle. Instead of following orders, he informed Lt. Mitchell that he had a pistol in his pocket. He was placed in handcuffs, and the gun was removed.
The caller advised officers that the driver had beaten on her that morning and throughout the day.
He was placed in a patrol car, and his vehicle was searched for additional weapons. Officers found a .32 caliber revolver in the console that he forgot to inform officers about.
Additionally, inside the vehicle officers found a canister containing a powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, as well as a clear straw containing some of the same substance.
The distressed female passenger was transported to Coosa Valley Medical Center.
The driver, 52-year-old Lloyd Jerrell Crow III of Goodwater, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance – cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and third-degree domestic violence – assault.
His total bond for all three charges was set at $12,500. He was released on January 27 to await trial.
Anyone who observes or suspects illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
